Homework and Practice

The settings for homework and practice are generally laxer. For these items, instructors tend to allow more feedback before the closing date.

  • Question Behavior

    • Adaptive Mode (no penalties): This will allow students to use the Check Button to check their work for accuracy after the complete attempt of each question within the assignment.

  • Review Options

    • During Attempt: Check all besides Right Answer. This will allow students to see whether each answer is correct during the attempt, without telling them the right answer. Also, please note that Overall feedback is grayed out since this setting is disabled During the attempt.
    • Immediately After Attempt: Check all besides Right Answer. If you have a randomized version of each question, it may be beneficial to allow the students to see the right answers, but if one version of the question is used, students will be able simply to fill in the correct answers on their next attempt if Right Answer is given from previous attempts.
    • Later, while the assignment is still open: Check all besides Right Answer. If you have a randomized version of each question, it may be beneficial to allow the students to see the right answers, but if one version of the question is used, students will be able to simply fill in the correct answers on their next attempt if Right Answer is given from the previous attempt and the questions remain the same on every attempt.
    • After the assignment has closed: Check all selections. Once no more submissions are allowed, it is beneficial to the students to see the right answers for the problems.

Assignments, Exams, and Assessments

Generally, it is best to reduce the amount of feedback given until the closing date of the assignment or exam has passed. This reduces cheating.

  • Question Behavior
    • Deferred Feedback: This will defer any kind of feedback the students receive until after their assignment has been submitted.

  • Review Options

    • During Attempt: No feedback will be permissible during the actual attempt (due to the setting of Deferred Feedback). This is why the selections are grayed out.

    • Immediately After Attempt: Un-check all selections besides The attempt. At this time, students will have no indication of what is correct/incorrect or what the correct answer is.

    • Later, while the assignment is still open: Un-check all selections besides The attempt. At this time, students will have no indication of what is correct/incorrect or what the correct answer is.

    • After the assignment has closed: Check all selections. Once no more submissions are allowed, it is beneficial for the students to see the right answers for the problems.

Once you have chosen the settings for the Auto Graded assignment, it will be live on your course page, unless you hide it, so your students could potentially see an assignment with no questions, like a front cover with no content.

IMPORTANT: In your list of review options, you must have The attempt (the first option in the lists) selected before you can enable the options to show Whether correct, Specific feedback, General feedback, and Right answer. If you choose not to let the students review the attempt, your only options are to display Points and Overall feedback.
